The smallest painting she made travelled further than almost anything else she made.
Field went out at least six times across eleven years — Chicago, Los Angeles, Pennsylvania — and came home each time. Juries kept picking it, which is worth pausing on, because it is the one painting in the archive with no text on it at all.
It is a field of colour rather than a field of anything you could name: strata of pigment laid one over another, the drawing pared back until only the light is left. She painted it in 2011, alongside Mother Earth, Lotus Mind and Garden of Eden — the most productive stretch in the whole archive.
