BARBARA ROMAIN

Spring Flowers

Acrylic on wood, 36 × 48 inches

ABOUT THIS WORK

Spring Flowers is the loudest quiet painting in the estate. At 36 × 48 inches — painted in acrylic on wood, an unusual substrate in Barbara Romain's archive — it is the largest piece in the launch catalog and the broadest entry into her landscape work. She painted from memory, color and rhythm rather than literal observation, and that's exactly what this is: not a record of flowers but the feel of bloom as an act of force. Stand close and you can almost hear the season insisting itself into the room.
