Much of what was in that carton had been written specifically about people like her.
Dialogue: Star came out of the same box of white-supremacist books as Dialogue: Peace, was made for the same exhibition, and went to Montana in the same crate in April 2007. Where Peace answers with a peace sign, Star answers with a Star of David.
“As a Jewish artist, I felt personally compelled to respond,” she wrote. “Much of the literature is highly anti-Semitic.” A Jewish American woman who had spent decades building paintings out of language, handed a library written to erase her — and she pointed out that text sits at the centre of Jewish religious tradition too. The two facts meet on this canvas: the words of people who wanted her gone, re-set by her hand into a blessing.
Acrylic and collage on canvas, 2007 — and the collage is the argument, not the technique. Those are the pages themselves, painted over.
The pair have travelled together for eighteen years, thirty-two showings across thirty-one venues since 2008, and they have never come home. Their most recent stop was the DeVos Art Museum in Michigan, in early 2026. Nothing else she made has travelled a tenth as far.
