NEW BEGINNINGS
In June 2006 a young gallery in the NoHo Arts District held its first juried exhibition, New Beginnings: A Celebration of the Summer Solstice, and hung nineteen artists chosen by the photographer Dave Esterson from submissions across the country. Barbara entered Royal Flush, a red-and-pink card game of a painting on a wood panel.
The record is one newspaper page and one card. The Studio City Sun sent Sophia Louisa Lee to the reception, printed a group photograph with Barbara in it, and reported the prizes: third place to Barbara for Royal Flush, second to Joel Sager, and for both “a duo exhibition at Satsuma in 2007.” That is where her CV’s “2-Person Exhibit Award” comes from—one prize, one painting, one show.
THE VENUE
Satsuma Gallery
5447 Satsuma Avenue, in the NoHo Arts District of North Hollywood. Founded by Richard Doran; a gallery that also housed working studios for its resident artists.

June 15 – July 27, 2006
Artists’ reception Saturday, June 24, 6–9 pm—“a crowd of at least 200 friends, art collectors and spectators,” by the paper’s count. Juror: Dave Esterson, photographer. Nineteen artists, one work each named on the card.
THE PRIZE
Third place, and a show
“Romain was awarded third place for her vibrantly red let’s-get-married-in-Vegas-like Royal Flush painting. Second place went to Joel Sager of Missouri… Both Sager and Romain will be rewarded with a duo exhibition at Satsuma in 2007.” The show became Destruction of the State: Writing on the Wall, August 2007.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Barbara in print
Barbara Romain is a painter and performing artist who received a BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and an MFA from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.
Her paintings have been widely exhibited, including group shows at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Washburn Gallery and Union Station in Washington, D.C., the Luggage Store Gallery in San Francisco, the San Francisco Art Commission Gallery at City Hall, the Watts Towers Art Center Gallery and numerous Los Angeles venues. In 2005, she created “Bad Eye on the Good Foot,” a solo exhibit at the Art Around Gallery in Philadelphia.
She is an Artist in Residence for the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs for 2005–06 and 2006–07, and a past three-time California Arts Council Artist in Residence for her work at Art Options, an interdisciplinary arts-based program where she has served more than 1,000 at-risk Los Angeles students since 1992. She was recently awarded a 2006–07 Teaching Artist Fellowship by Very Special Arts, an affiliate of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
