JURIED EXHIBITION PRESS DOSSIER · LONG BEACH + SANTA MONICA · 2007–2018

CORE: DEFINING OURSELVES

CORE: Defining Ourselves is an annual juried exhibition and performance series for artists with disabilities, presented in Long Beach by Arts & Services for Disabled, Inc.—renamed Able ARTS Work in 2017—with the National Arts and Disability Center at UCLA. Barbara curated the third edition in 2007 and hung Born Under a Bad Sign in it; she was then selected for CORE 5 in 2009 and showed in most editions through 2018.

There is no press review on file. The record is the organizer’s and hers: the 2007 curator’s statement, the 2009 selection letter, the calls and entry forms of 2010 to 2017, the CORE 10 postcard that fixes the 2014 venue, her submission lists with the works named, and photographs from CORE 3, 5 and 7.

STATEMENT

ARTIST STATEMENT

Barbara, as curator, 2007

When I was diagnosed with a retinal degenerative disease, I had been painting figuratively in oil for years. As I became legally blind, I seriously questioned my ability to continue painting. I slowly transformed my thinking and techniques to incorporate my physical limitations as an integral part of my work.

My color palette grows more vivid as my sight diminishes. I create original stencils, which form icons as imagery. Physical movements of my body often replace the precision of my eyes as the vehicle for placing marks. I am increasingly inspired by the world of sound, music and language. My paintings become improvisational, multi-layered weavings of words, where the viewer is invited to create his/her own poetry.

My paintings are now less influenced by what I physically see and more informed by what I hear, remember and imagine.

“We define ourselves in many ways: how we present ourselves to the community, how we interact with others, and how we relate to the world around us.”

— Barbara Romain, curator’s statement for CORE III: Defining Ourselves, 2007
