What Comes After Black

Black is where her sight was going. The title asks what is on the other side of it.
“What Comes After Black is an urban landscape with narratives taken from my own dream journals,” Barbara Romain wrote. “Imagery was inspired after 9/11 and relates to my vision loss.” Three things at once, then: a city, a public catastrophe, and a private one — the dreams of a painter who could see less every year, laid into the streets of the place she lived.
A juror at the University of Nebraska found it in a field of roughly three hundred international entries and called it “another excellent field work using text.” She took three of the awards in that one exhibition. This was one of them.
She never answers the question. That is the painting.
