Every word in this painting is a Los Angeles street name.
"Many texts are found," Barbara Romain wrote in her artist's statement, "such as in 'Thomas Guide,' where the texts are all L.A. street names."
The Thomas Guide was the spiral-bound street atlas Angelenos kept in the glovebox before phones took over. She took the names off the map and made them the painting.
She had a reason for working at this scale, and she gave it plainly: "Physical movements of my body must replace the precision of my eyes as the vehicle for placing marks."
