"The 'Trane' refers to John Coltrane."
Barbara Romain corrected the title herself, mid-conversation — it is Last Lady Trane — and then said where it came from: a track on a recording by her brother, the saxophonist and poet Elliott Levin. "I just liked it."
Then she described the painting the way a musician describes an arrangement. "The movement and the gestures of the colors refer to different movements and gestures of different instruments, and then the text is layered on top. And then there's these other kind of symbols in there that are stencils that I created, that I just felt matched the feeling of the work."
