In My Front Yard

A self-portrait that has been hanging in a hospital for sixteen years.
Barbara painted herself standing in her own front yard in Echo Park, in the dark glasses she wore, her orange tree and her bougainvillea around her. It is the plainest picture she ever made of herself, and one of the very few.
It has been in the permanent collection of Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital in Pennsylvania since 2009, a gift to the hospital from one of its longtime physicians and his wife, who took it home from the Art Ability exhibition and then gave it back. It hangs in a conference room with a wall label beside it.
It is the only work by Barbara Romain the estate can point to with an accession number.
