BARBARA ROMAIN

Carnaby Street

Oil on canvas, 19.5 × 23.5 inches

ABOUT THIS WORK

Carnaby Street is Barbara's youngest pulse — pure pop, pure street. 19.5 × 23.5 inches, oil on canvas — oil is rare in Barbara Romain's archive, which is dominated by acrylic — titled for the London street that became shorthand for an era. This is the painter's youthful eye, before the diagnosis, before the late text-based abstractions: fashion, music and color caught at speed. It moves faster than you do.
