Barbara Romain filled this sky with a single question, written over and over in teal, white, and gold: What can be said that is more important than the beauty of the sky? Line by line, the handwriting loosens, blurs, and gives up being words at all — and exactly where the language dissolves, Los Angeles appears: green palms, a bright valley, a violet dusk. The landscape is made of her sentences. She never named this painting. So we let her name it herself: the title is drawn word-for-word from the question she painted into its sky.
